Elon Musk Green – Lit an Exaggeration of Tesla’s Autopilot’s Abilities

In 2016, Elon Musk oversaw the production of a video that implied the Tesla is a fully self-driving vehicle. Although Musk stated that these cars would not be equipped with full self-driving capability upon receipt, but rather they would have these abilities in the future, the video suggests otherwise.

Misleading Messages and Autopilot Crashes

Although Musk wrote in earlier emails that Tesla would be demonstrating its future abilities, he also instructed staffers to begin the video with language and messaging about the present. In fact, throughout the video’s creation, Musk made a number of requests that ultimately depicted the Tesla as a self-driving vehicle, including the statement, “The person in the driver’s seat is only there for legal reasons. He is not doing anything.”

The video also shows the Tesla parallel parking itself after the engineer exits the vehicle, further cementing the idea that no one needs to be behind the wheel to operate it.

The video now serves as important evidence in a number of Autopilot crash lawsuits against Tesla. The family of Walter Huang, who died in an Autopilot-related crash in 2018, filed a lawsuit in 2019 in an attempt to hold Tesla accountable.

Determining Liability in an Autopilot Accident

If you were injured in a car accident that involved a self-driving vehicle like Tesla, who is responsible? In some cases, the manufacturer may be held liable if the accident was caused by a malfunction, such faulty Autopilot steering. However, the driver may be held liable for your injuries if they were overly reliant on Autopilot, were reckless, or driving under the influence.
